I enjoy working with each client individually to match their treatment needs and desired changes with the method of treatment. I also specialize in resolving distressing and/or traumatic life experiences. These experiences often keep us stuck in behaviors that are baffling and even debilitating a times. Efforts to change often feel overwhelming and defeating. Through EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) and other creative strategies, I have assisted many clients to realize new behavioral patterns and positive beliefs about themselves. I believe the reprocessing of psychological distress provides individuals in depth healing and renewed emotional freedom.

I currently utilize EMDR in conjunction with other therapeutic strategies (e.g., Art therapy, DBT, and MBCT) to help individuals reprocess psychological difficulties connected to addictive behaviors, traumatic life experiences, as well as grief/loss. I also utilize EMDR to assist clients in overcoming performance anxiety (e.g., athletic performance, text anxiety). I also utilize an addiction recovery model to treat eating disorders, gambling addictions, substance abuse, and other behavioral addictions.

“Over ten years ago, I met Sandra Derks at a professional presentation she gave on adolescents and substance abuse. I liked her approach and asked her to be my supervisor. In my consultations with Sandra I find her to be knowledgeable about many areas of practice beside her specialty in addictions. She has a unique gift of listening and posing thoughtful questions that help me understand my clients and their problems. She has a plethora of resources to use in treatment planning and has generously shared them with me. In addition to her empathic nature, Sandra is pragmatic and has a sense of humor that creates a wonderful atmosphere for learning and growth. She is a special counselor and person and I highly recommend her.”  L.G., MA, LCPC, CADC, OTR/
